The national rugby team from Fiji will arrive at the 2011 Rugby World Cup as the favourites from the South Pacific rugby teams to advance to the knock out stages of the RWC. Fiji has embarked on a period of development to improve the quality of their rugby, and is hoping to best the team’s excellent inaugural 1987 Rugby World Cup performance, where they advanced to the quarter finals before losing to France.
Fiji again qualified for the 2007 Rugby World Cup quarter finals, beating Wales in a one of the best games of the competition before losing to South Africa, who would go on to lift the William Webb Ellis Cup that year.
Samoa are currently ranked 11th in the IRB world rankings, and will be in Pool D for the 2011 Rugby World Cup, along with defending champions South Africa, Wales, Fiji, and Namibia.
Samoa beat Papua New Guinea to qualify for Rugby World Cup 2011, becoming the second nation to advance through the qualifying process, and the 14th team to secure its place at RWC 2011.
Following their controversial omission from the 1987 Rugby world Cup when there were no qualifications, Samoa has played in every Rugby World Cup since then. Samoa was eliminated in the quarter finals of the 1991 and 1995 Rugby World Cup, and progressed to the quarter final playoffs in the 1999 RWC. The 2003 and 2007 Rugby World Cup saw Samoa eliminated in the pool stages.
Samoa kick off their 2011 Rugby World Cup campaign against Namibia in Rotorua on the 14th September, followed by a game against Wales in Hamilton on the 18th September. Samoa’s much anticipated third Pool D clash will be against Fiji on the 25th September in Auckland, which is the world’s largest Polynesian city with a large and passionate Samoan and Fijian rugby fan base. The final RWC 2011 pool game for Samoa will be against South Africa, again in Auckland, on the 30th September.
Nicknamed Manu Samoa, and coached by Filipo Levi, Samoa will come to the 2011 Rugby World Cup with a team able to place stronger opponents under pressure with a physical and unyielding approach to the game. Samoa will need to focus on maintaining structure and discipline if they are to achieve consistent success at the Rugby World Cup.
